Just seen this and read the little bit about it on BBC news website.
I regard him as one of ours and seriously forgot he played for Chelsea.
Never quite fulfilled his potential imo

Loved him. He loved us and he loved football.

Had his potential coached out of him by Jose. Cheers, you Portuguese wanker.

Re: Joe Cole retires from football
Maybe didn't quite fulfill his potential, but none the less had a great career including over 50 England caps. and made a fortune.

Was an utter disaster at Liverpool..was that Jose's fault too?

Great career, could've been even better if he'd have played under Wenger or Ferguson rather than Mourinho.

One of my favourite players.

Yeh, was a gifted player and a joy to watch. A proper playmaker with all the tricks of the trade. As said, shame it was stifled by the killjoys.

Exactly Bernie Mourihno ruined him

I much preferred Carrick (who turned out to be the much better footballer) when they were both coming through.

Cole seems to always go on too much about Chelsea to make me give too much of a shit about him retiring.

Spot the fuck on.

I will never forget during that demolition of Coventry at Upton Park in the youth final, when he instinctively made a pass over the defence down the touchline that a load of Jimmy White backspin on the ball so it didn't go out of play. I was stunned. Hadn't seen a pass like it, and haven't seen one since. Incredible talent, that was indeed coached out of him by the Special Needs One.

Re: Joe Cole retires from football
Sometimes he used to annoy me.

E.g., away at Chesterfield in the League Cup (the one we drew and then won on penalties, not the one we lost), he kept beating his man, and, instead of using the momentum to create a chance, he came back and beat him again.

Showboating like that should be reserved for when we've got a healthy lead, if at all.

He annoyed me a lot more when he sold his soul to the Stamford Bridge demons

Good luck to him. A whole hearted youngster when busting a gut for us, unlike some seasoned pros, to avoid relegation.

HERP-A-DERP
Decent player but tainted by jumping in with the rent boy crowd after scoring against us.

Re: Joe Cole retires from football
Loved watching him play as a younsgster breaking into the team.

Chelsea was a success for him, but for me he was never quite the same player. By the time he came back to us his mobility was shot to pieces. I wish we were left with the memories of the youngster rather than the way he was when he returned.

That said he’s done well to still be nicking a living out of the game all these years later

Re: Joe Cole retires from football
Filings, his return in 2012 was a sad affair especially seeing him substituted by BFS very early in a game at a packed Boleyn ground.

Terrific footballer who I loved watching play and a great fella... used to do loads and loads for youth football.. just turned up and had a kick about with the kids... great lad... the one game for us that sticks out for me and this may sound daft was the 0-6 massacre in the cup v Man United... players of ours quit that day (Sinclair being the main one) .. but Joe never stopped... he was virtually playing that Man U team on his own... spoke to a few Mancs on the metro back to Eccles after and they was in awe of his performance that day

Re: Joe Cole retires from football
Ex West ham and Chelsea Player Peter Braybrook was one of the youth team coaches at West Ham and helped bring Joe through the ranks alongside Carr etc.

A few years later when Joe was at Chelsea Peter needed both knees replaced at a cost of about 40k. He asked West Ham and Chelsea at the time and both said no.

A couple of weeks later he got a letter through the post that read.

Peter, thanks for everything you did for me, just wanted to show my appreciation, Joe

Along with a cheque for 40k.

I know Peters daughter and she always talked about what that meant to her old man. Top bloke is Joe in my book. Wish we had more players like him around nowadays.

I saw his debut up at old trafford. There had been so much hype about him in the Evening standard for months before.I was well happy when i found out he was gonna play.
Her had a quiet game in fairness but all in all a wonderful player for us

Re: Joe Cole retires from football
Just seen his stats and i thought he was a bit injury prone but he has made over 700 appearances...

Just wish Sir Alex had bought him off of us instead.
